Colloids, Grains and Dense Suspensions: under Flow and under Arrest

Announcement

Colloids, Grains and Dense Suspensions: under Flow and under Arrest

2 Day Discussion Meeting – Free International Scientific Conference

9 – 10 March 2009

Location:

The Royal Society

6-9 Carlton House Terrace

London SW1Y 5AG

Organised by

Professor Michael Cates FRS (University of Edinburgh), Dr Paul Bartlett (University of Bristol),

Professor Wilson Poon (University of Edinburgh).

Synopsis

Colloidal suspensions undergo Brownian diffusion that arrests at high density, remobilizing under flow. Slowly sheared non-Brownian particles (dry or in suspension) likewise show chaotic trajectories, but of quite different origin. Both systems can jam spontaneously when too large a stress is applied. This meeting will compare and contrast the flow, jamming and arrest of Brownian and non-Brownian materials.

Chairs

Professor Henk Lekkerkerker, Professor Rudolf Klein

Dr Daniel Bonn, Professor Bulbul Chakraborty, Professor Matthias Fuchs, Professor Jennifer Lewis, Professor Narayan Menon, Professor Sidney Nagel, Professor David Pine, Dr Olivier Pouliquen, Professor Peter Pusey FRS, Dr Fahrang Radjai, Dr Veronique Trappe, Professor Dimitris Vlassopoulos
